For the most part, the term "pornstar" is reserved for the girls (and guys) who appear in many released DVDs and have established a name for themselves. While anyone who appears in a sex movie is by broad definition a pornstar, it is more people like Asia Carrera or Ron Jeremy that are acknowledged as real pornstars. Girls making their first couple of movies are often refered to as fresh faces, or up and comers. With the internet and the increasing number of new girls coming into the business, it is often hard to tell up and comers from girls who are just passing through.

When a girl becomes a contract girl by signing an exclusive or semi-exclusive deal with a production company or studio, she is generally considered to have "made it" and become a pornstar.
